Rainbow Falls is a natural wonder of Hawaii located in Hilo, Hawaii. The Wailuku River is the main tributary to Rainbow Falls, which ends up in a beautiful pool at the bottom of the waterfall. Surrounding Rainbow Falls is a lush green scenery and wild ginger. The waterfall was given the name Rainbow Falls because of the rainbow that is created by the mist at the bottom of the waterfall most every morning. Rainbow Falls is 80 feet tall and approximately 100 feet in diameter and sits on 16.3 acres. The waterfall flows over a naturally formed lava cave. Legend has it the cave is home to Hina, the mother of the demigod Maui. Rainbow Falls is part of Wailuku River State Park and can be best viewed at the observation tower off Waianuenue Avenue. The best time to view the rainbow is after a rainfall when the river is rushing even faster over the waterfall.
